A walk through San Sebastián

We suggest you a walk through San Sebastián and its places of interest, walking route through the nineteenth century Ensanche and the Old Town.

The tour will start in front of the Hotel Maria Cristina, luxury accommodation that evokes the Belle Époque and that, together with the elegant Victoria Eugenia Theater, embraces each year the famous San Sebastián Film Festival. We will walk next to the Zurriola bridge, where on the other side of the breakwater we reach the Palacio de Congresos and the Kursaal auditorium of Rafael Moneo.

We will advance through the Boulevard with its characteristic French-style mansions, to approach the old town of Donostia. We will approach the skirts of Mount Urgull, where the impressive statue of the Sacred Heart and the fortifications and canyons of the Castillo de la Mota are located, and, while we take a look at the exquisite products of the traditional cuisine.

We will meet the Sarriegui square the custom of celebrating to the patron through the well-known Tamborrada of San Sebastián. We will enter on the Old Part from the oldest building in the city, the Church of San Vicente, a Basque Gothic-style temple located next to the San Telmo museum that houses several steps from Easter.

We will stop to contemplate the Plaza de la Constitución, the “Consti”, as people of San Sebastián we call it, the main square of the entire city, home to the great festivities and celebrations of San Sebastián and one of the most typical areas to discover the rite of the Basque pintxo.

Between bars, shops and gastronomic societies, we will pass by Calle 31 of August, where we will remember the harsh Napoleonic wars and the reconstruction of the city, and we will be surprised by the magnificent doorway of the Basilica of Santa María which starts at Calle Mayor and visually joins, in the background, the Buen Pastor Cathedral.

From there we will move to the Port, the original place of the city, where a small nucleus of fishermen, already in the Middle Ages, was dedicated to whaling. In the background, after the veteran Aquarium and the Nautical Club, we can see the island of Santa Clara and the popular Mount Igueldo in the maritime landscape.

Following the railing of the promenade we will end at the splendid, original and distinguished City Hall, in front of the Alderdi Eder gardens, at the beginning of the famous La Concha beach, the most beautiful in Europe and a tourist destination preferred by royalty in the past.
